Liga MB Round 6 (Regular Season): Metapan lose their first game against Santa Tecla

The most surprising game was the first loss of Metapan (5-1) on the court of fifth ranked Santa Tecla on Wednesday night. Visitors were edged by Santa Tecla 83-81. Dominican Xavier dela Rosa (196-1991) had a double-double by scoring 34 points (!!!) and 12 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and American guard Sammy Colmenero (185-1992, college: SF State) chipped in 25 points during the contest. The best for the losing side was Cuban forward Yoel Cubillas (204-1994) with a double-double by scoring 29 points and 10 rebounds (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). Santa Tecla (4-2) moved-up to fourth place. Metapan at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. They share it with San Salvador. Santa Tecla are looking forward to face league's second-placed San Salvador on the road in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Metapan will have a break next round.
Very important is a home loss of first ranked Salvadorenos (4-1) against sixth ranked Brujos (3-2) on Thursday night. Host Salvadorenos were defeated by Brujos in San Salvador 84-71. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Salvadorenos. Bahamas forward KJ Reckley (201, college: Niagara) notched a double-double by scoring 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead the effort and Brent Kelly supported him with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Even 32 points by guard Diego Minero (187-2007) did not help to save the game for Salvadorenos. Brujos moved-up to fifth place, which they share with A.Lobos. Salvadorenos at the other side dropped to the third position with one game lost. Brujos will play against Santiagueno (#7) in Usultan in the next round. Salvadorenos will play on the road against Ahuachapan (#8) and hope to get back on the winning track.

The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Ahuachapan (1-4) left bottom position moving up to eighth place. It was Santa Ana's sixth loss in a row. They still close the standings with six games lost. Ahuachapan will meet at home higher ranked Salvadorenos (#3) in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Santa Ana will have a break next round.

In the last two games of round 6 winless Santa Ana was destroyed by San Salvador on the opponent's court 91-57. Metapan outscored Cojute in a home game 88-65.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 28 points and 11 rebounds by Lee Vasquez of Metapan.

Ahuachapan has finally registered their first victory this season after four consecutive losses. The win is especially important as it came on the road game in Santa Ana, where they outplayed Santa Ana (0-6) 101-75 on Wednesday. Ahuachapan forced 21 Santa Ana turnovers. Strangely Santa Ana outrebounded Ahuachapan 56-43 including 25 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The best player for the winners was American-Laos guard Kadeim Jones (191-1999, college: UWG) who had a double-double by scoring 24 points, 15 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals. Nigerian-American forward Destiny Chikwem-Stanley (203-1999, college: CMU) chipped in a double-double by scoring 32 points and 11 rebounds. Four Ahuachapan players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Daylon Potts (196, college: Simpson, CA) who recorded 23 points, 26 rebounds and 9 assists and his fellow American import power forward Dhol Majak (208-2000, college: Park-Gilbert, agency: Interperformances) added 12 points and 13 rebounds respectively. Very important is a home loss of first ranked Salvadorenos (4-1) against sixth ranked Brujos (3-2) on Thursday night. Host Salvadorenos were defeated by Brujos in San Salvador 84-71. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Salvadorenos. Brujos dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Salvadorenos' 24. Brujos forced 20 Salvadorenos turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. Bahamas forward KJ Reckley (201, college: Niagara) notched a double-double by scoring 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead the effort and American guard Brent Kelly (185-2000, college: Nichols) supported him with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Kelly is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Brujos players scored in double figures. Even 32 points by guard Diego Minero (187-2007) did not help to save the game for Salvadorenos. Naturalized Mali power forward Ibrahima Traore (208-2005, college: Utah) added 7 points and 13 rebounds. Brujos moved-up to fifth place, which they share with A.Lobos. Salvadorenos at the other side dropped to the third position with one game lost. Brujos will play against Santiagueno (#7) in Usultan in the next round. Salvadorenos will play on the road against Ahuachapan (#8) and hope to get back on the winning track.

Very expected game when bottom-ranked Santa Ana (0-6) was crushed on the road by third ranked San Salvador (5-1) 91-57 on Friday. San Salvador dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Santa Ana's 24. San Salvador forced 20 Santa Ana turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 33 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Santa Ana's players. The best player for the winners was Venezuelan-Colombian center Michael Hinestroza (210-1990, college: UALR) who had a double-double by scoring 13 points, 14 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals. Naturalized Canadian forward Jonathan Rivera (206-2000, college: York) chipped in 23 points and 6 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Daylon Potts (196, college: Simpson, CA) who recorded a double-double by scoring 19 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists and his fellow American import power forward Dhol Majak (208-2000, college: Park-Gilbert, agency: Interperformances) added 10 points and 17 rebounds respectively. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. San Salvador have a solid three-game winning streak. They used an opportunity after Metapan lost their game and moved up joining them at the top position. Loser Santa Ana still closes the standings with six games lost. San Salvador will meet at home Santa Tecla (#4) in the next round. Santa Ana will have a break next round.

Very predictable result when first ranked Metapan (5-1) smashed at home 9th ranked Cojute (1-5) 88-65 on Friday. The best player for the winners was Guatemalan point guard Lee Vasquez (173) who had a double-double by scoring 28 points and 11 rebounds. Cuban forward Yoel Cubillas (204-1994) chipped in a double-double by scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds. Metapan's coach felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the other side the best for losing team was Puerto Rican guard Hector Maldonado (185-1991) who recorded 24 points and 4 assists and point guard Ronald Melendez (178-1984) added 12 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Metapan maintains first position with 5-1 record, which they share with San Salvador. Cojute lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the ninth place with five games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
